With their self-titled debut EP South London’s Cloud Studies have expanded their hazy, reverb-drenched world into something deeper, darker and more immersive.

Bringing together Cloud Cartography (Extended), Dreams About, Avenue and Hiding Place, the four song EP captures a band pushing beyond the edges of shoegaze and dreampop, stretching the form into something more panoramic and emotionally charged.

Opener Cloud Cartography (Extended) reimagines one of their defining tracks as a slow-burning, skyward drift of chiming guitars and layered textures, building to a crescendo that signals the return to the band of founding member Michael Malley.

The following track, the single Dreams About is Cloud Studies at their most uplifting; shimmering guitars with melodic arpeggios that throw-back to classic periods of indiepop with lyrics that celebrate escaping the drudgery of the daily grind through prescription drugs.

Avenue touches on indietronica, being a reflective and quietly political piece shaped by environmental change, a meditation on loss, renewal and the act of paying attention to what disappears around us.

Closer Hiding Place reveals the band’s darker edge. Exploring the psychology of stalking, the track trades beauty for unease, tense and unsettling with blasts of noise; ‘Hiding Place’ shows the band pushing their sound into post-punk territory, a sound they call gothgaze.

Across the EP the band, along with collaborators Natalie Guest (drums), Kirstin Isolde Lavender (vocals) and Adrian Taylor (guitar), weave together shoegaze, post-punk, ambient and folktronica influences into something cohesive but never predictable. With early support building and a growing reputation for immersive live shows, this debut EP feels less like an introduction and more like a statement of intent. Cloud Studies aren’t just revisiting the past, they’re reshaping it into something new, and letting it drift into somewhere unexpected.

Since forming in 2024, Cloud Studies have earned attention for their widescreen approach to dream-pop and shoegaze, blending lush guitars, introspective lyricism, and textural experimentation across their early singles. Acclaim has come from the likes of esteemed industry bible The Unsigned Guide and blogs, with, not least the Analogue Trash blog who said ‘since forming, they have produced some of the best shoegaze the UK has to offer’. The band has received official playlisting from Qobuz, Apple Music and Tidal including the no.1 slot in their Indie Britain playlist.
