biography
Needing to find something to do with the vast array of effects pedals that they had amassed, three friends decided to experiment and see what might happen. The resulting band was Cloud Studies, exploring a panoramic, reverb drenched sound that bridges classic shoegaze and the post-punk goth sound.
Formed in Catford, South London in 2024 by indie stalwarts Adam Cresswell, formerly of Saloon (Darla Records) and Rodney Cromwell on vocals and bass, Michael Malley formerly of Pullover (Fierce Panda) on guitar and graphic designer Martin J Langthorne (of Solemn Arcade) also on guitar.
Their debut 'Ghosts' was released for Halloween 2024 to quiet acclaim. Inspired by the hauntological eeriness of the Usborne book 'The World of the Unknown: Ghosts', the track introduced listeners to the band’s distinctive blend of melancholy and melody. The songs Halloween timed release saw it quickly amassing well over a million views on Instagram Reels and TikTok.
2025 saw further singles and more recognition. Their follow-up single, 'Cloud Cartography', took a more expansive direction, drawing from the stark beauty of the Derryveagh Mountains in Donegal Ireland. Their most upbeat song 'Dreams About' explored the themes of unrequited love, and numbing of workday drudgery through prescription drugs. In the summer they dropped a remix of 'Ghosts' by iconic and enigmatic Michigan dreampop band, Auburn Lull, and they closed 2025 with a cover of 'Last Night I Fell Again' by iconic first wave shoegazers Moose, with Kirstin Isolde Lavender on vocals. Acclaim included countless blog features, with not least a coveted spotlight feature with industry bible 'The Unsigned Guide'. The Analogue Trash blog went as far as to say "they have produced some of the best shoegaze the UK has to offer". On the streaming platforms official playlisting came from Apple Music, Qobuz and three placements from Tidal, including the no1 spot in their Indie Britain playlist.
Over 2025 the Cloud Studies line-up was as fluid and ephemeral as the clouds themselves, with the band settling back as a three piece composed of the three founding members, in early 2026.They are currently booking live shows and working on material for their debut album.
